Red light therapy is an innovative use of light therapy which utilizes the body’s reactions to red light, just as other light therapies rely on distinct bodily reactions to other tints of light. By simply focusing a specific type of red light onto the part of your body that troubles you, you can activate adenosine triphosphate in the tissues beneath your skin. This puts in motion a number of positive, healthy reactions inside your body which can relieve pain and increase collagen production to reduce wrinkles.

Which Lights?

As this site is about Red Light Therapy devices then obviously all of the products that we feature do have a red light. This type of light works by penetrating below the skin surface and they do this by emitting at a certain wavelength. Although it varies with some machines the standard red light wavelength is between 620-690nm and this penetrates below the skins surface to a depth of about 8-10mm. At this depth the red light can be used to diminish scars, alleviate wounds, for collagen production, increased blood flow, improved skin texture and elasticity.

Infrared light operates at wavelengths of about 800nm and provides a deeper penetration to about 40mm. This will typically be your best option for pain relief therapy because at that depth it is working on deep muscle tissue, organs, joints and bones.

Blue lights operate much closer to the surface which is why they are so effective for acne as they attack the bacteria just below the skins surface. The wavelength for blue light therapy is typically in the 400-480nm range where it penetrates to a depth of about 1-2mm. It should be noted that most of the recent studies we’ve seen have concluded that a combination of both blue and red light therapy appears to be the best for the treatment of acne.

Hand Held or Stand & Head Size

Although this a matter of personal choice based upon how you feel you will best use your device you don’t really have a lot of product choice if you decide that you would like a stand. If you want a stand then your own real option right now is the DPL Therapy System, fortunately, it is one of the best systems available although it is one of the more expensive.

Stand: With a stand based system you are obviously going to have your hands free which is a big advantage for some people. We would say that this advantage is only realized when you are not working your face, especially with the DPL system. As this model has two panels and your face needs to be really close to the panels (if not touching them) then when you are using it you are not going to see anything and this somewhat limits what you can do with your hands.

If this is not an issue then the stand does provide the easiest way to have a therapy session, it is the closest that the red light therapy world has to offer in terms of ‘plug and play’. Just switch it on and get up close, you don’t have to hold your hand to your face or create facial areas/sections to work through.

When you are working other parts of the body, particularly for the pain relief benefits, then the Velcro straps provided with the DPL system can be a real god send. Just secure them in the necessary position and sit and relax whilst the red light does it work.

Hand held devices do offer the advantages of portability and versatility. They are smaller and in most cases they are not going to take up much space in a travel bag, particularly the ANSR Beam. Each of the products comes with recommended usage guidelines but you are going to have to hold the device over targeted areas for a set time before you move to the next section that you are targeting. If there are very specific areas that you wish to work like sun spots, scars or stretch marks then hand held devices will allow you to work these very easily.

If, like a lot of people, you like the idea of being able to watch TV as you have a therapy session then hand held devices are the way to go.

Head Size: If working small areas of your skin one section at a time sounds like a chore, or if you are short of time then your best option might be to choose a device with a larger head. Although most of the devices available work within standard wavelengths some do seem to be more powerful than others so make sure you do your research – big does not always mean better.

We have only reviewed a small number of products on this site, the ones that we think to be effective, so assuming you are getting the correct light that you require then go for the one with the biggest head if this is going to be an important consideration for you.

Reputation And Customer Service

The technology is relatively new for the home market and most of the manufacturers are of the smaller and more specialized variety. There is a good chance that you are not going to have heard of the makers so you will need to do a little bit of research if customer service is an important consideration for you.

Of the products we have selected to review we believe that the only one you really need to show some caution with is the Evis MD Platinum. By all accounts they are starting to get their act together but there are quite a few horror stories of bad or non-existent customer service, which is a shame because it is a very good product.

Baby Quasar probably have the strongest reputation and they have been making red light devices the longest, their home based models are essentially smaller versions of their professional range of machines. ANSR are a pretty classy act and as we have heard no bad reports we can only assume they’re customer service is good. We also have not heard any bad reports about the DPL therapy system so you should be OK with this one.

We always tell people that they should buy from a large company with a good reputation, that way if anything does go wrong then they will go out of the way to help you. That being the case we always recommend Amazon.com given that they are one of the largest in the world with one of the best reputations to maintain.

So, What Exactly Is It?

Red Light Therapy is a therapeutic treatment of various medical concerns by stimulating the body’s natural defenses through using red tinted light. What’s NASA Got to do With It?

Red light therapy was derived from NASA light technology that was intended for experimental plant growth in space shuttle missions. It turned out that the far red or near infrared light, when used in a treatment NASA called High Emissivity Aluminiferous Luminescent Substrate (HEALS), helped alleviate a very painful side effect of radiation and chemotherapy on cancer patients. The space agency ran a two-year trial that resulted in an encouraging 96% probability that reduced pain in cancer patients suffering from side effects of their treatment benefited from HEALS.
Pain relief was just the first step, however. As red light therapy grew to become a new health, wellness, and alternative treatment trend, enthusiasts have been discovering a lot of benefits and healthy advantages to the bright idea. NASA’s experiments showed that red light helped reduce pain because it helped promote healing. They were also quick to note that the therapy could also help in areas like better nutrition and morale for the patients undergoing treatment. The more obvious advantages also make this form of light therapy very attractive: it is non-invasive, has no associated stigmas, and could help alleviate stress like walks in the sunshine.

But Wait, is There Science Behind All Its Beneficial Claims?

The ANSR Beam has a lot of positive reviews, people really do love this little device. On Amazon right now over 60% of reviewers have given this product the full 5 stars and if we say that 4 and 5 star reviews mean that people think the product is good, then close to 90% have rated this product as good.

Most of the reviewers have focused on how effective the blue light has been for the treatment of their acne, especially cystic acne so we shall focus on those 1st:

• I’ve had globular cystic acne since 1975. Tried every prescription and over the counter product, and still was trapped with cysts that had to be injected each month to resolve them…and THIS WORKS!!! I’ve got a box full of medications I no longer need…just this amazing little light machine.
• I have polycystic ovaries which cause horrible hormonal cystic acne on my chin and I also get regular non-cystic acne everywhere else on my face. The ANSR has gotten rid of all of it.
• ANSR is the best thing I have ever tried, and believe me, I have tried everything and have spared no expense in my quest for clear skin.
• I am in my early 40s, have very sensitive skin, and have had very stubborn adult acne for well over a decade…I have been using this thing for close to two months now, and the only time my skin has been as clear as it is now was when I was on strong make-you-sick-to-your-stomach antibiotics.

Be Warned – Things could get worse before they get better

A few reviewers commented that during the early stages of treatment, typically after 1 – 2 weeks they noted a worsening in their condition, however, if you experience this then stick with it as there a very good chance that you will be rewarded once this stage is over:

• I have been using the Beam for exactly 1 month now…….it is incredible! The 1^st 2 weeks were bad but after reading other reviews I stuck it out for the full month before deciding. I had more activity than normal. Week 3 I had 1 emerge that is completely gone now. Today, on day 30, I have no cystic acne on my face at all! This is incredible for me. This is the ONLY thing that worked for me.
• I am 33 years old have had adult acne flare ups and pick scars for years. I was indifferent when I ordered this product, because I have been disappointed many times in the past. After a week and a half it seemed as though my skin was getting worse, particularly my chin, but be patient! 2-2.5 weeks into it my skin totally calmed down and I see results. Hyperpgmentation from picking has greatly faded and new pimples are few to none. Pores appear to be smaller too.

But what about the Red Light for Anti-Aging?

There is not as much praise for the effects of the red light, but we guess that it is to be expected as most people are buying it for their acne after reading the success stories. Research has shown that Red and Blue Light therapy combined provides the greatest results for your skin so it is extremely beneficial to get them in the same device.

This is not to say though that the ANSR Beam is not effective as an anti-aging device as these owners will testify:

• I LOVE this product!!!! Stop wasting your money on creams and try The Beam. It has taken 10 years off my appearance. My friends keep asking me what I have been doing because I look so much younger. This thing works.
• While I purchased the ANSR for my daughter’s acne, I have also been able to use it for my aging skin. I can say that I am seeing a change in my wrinkles and that a small red mark on my face is almost gone.
• Although best results are indicated after eight weeks of use, I’ve been using the red light for about two weeks and am pleased. I can already tell some differences in the wrinkles on my face – mostly with my “furrowed” look above my nose and between my eyebrows and the wrinkles around my eyes.
• I have had the ANSR Beam for a little over a month and it has changed my skin! A little time consuming I wish I had a whole body beam! I have break outs and wrinkles and this has calmed both! Thanks ANSR Beam!

There are a few people saying some negative things about the ANSR Beam but surprisingly few really. One person would have liked for the instruction booklet to be clearer and another lady complained that one charge only lasts 5 days with regular use. Another reviewer stated that she only gave the product 4 stars and not 5 because the target lens that you touch to your face is too similar to the rest of the device and that it is not exactly like a mobile phone as she doesn’t have to reset her phone before she charges it.

There are only four 1 star ratings on Amazon at the time of writing and this is the worst review that we came across. The person had bought the product after reading glowing reviews but found that 2 weeks her skin was worse so she gave up and went to the dermatologist. As this review was posted in November 2011 there were already a number of reviewers warning that this may happen, we feel it is a shame that she didn’t stick with it as she may have seen the results that others were reporting.

There is a positive 5 star rating on Amazon from a lady called Chandler. I won’t write about it here because it’s 2,000 words long and if you are still reading now then you’ve already read 2,000 words! She used to sell ingredients to scientists in the cosmetics industry so she has a unique perspective and provides some very useful and interesting information.

Our Recommendation

The ANSR Beam is primarily marketed as a device to fight acne, and it is extremely effective at this (along with a few other conditions). The benefits from the red light on anti-aging and pain relief are clearly there but because of the way that it is marketed this is not what people are buying it for. As a red light therapy device it works but the small head means that you are going to have to put in the effort to see the maximum benefits.

As a device to beat your acne with the added side effect of helping to make you look younger then this device is a winner. Factor in the low price, practicality and portability then this product is hard to beat. If you buy it to clear your skin and rid yourself of acne then stick with it even after you have your skin under control, the red light works and the effects are cumulative so there is no reason why you shouldn’t benefit from this great little product for years to come. We have no hesitation in recommending the ANSR Beam.

Like all Red Light Therapy devices the technology was developed by NASA but unlike all devices the EVIS MD is FDA approved and uses medical grade components. The red light penetrates below your skins surface and stimulates the production of collagen and enhances cellular metabolism needed for the repair and replenishment of damaged skin cells. The effects of this in terms of helping to look younger are:

Of all the products that we have reviewed the EVIS MD probably has the greatest proportion of success stories. Some have success quickly, for others it takes time but most people are reporting good results.

Fast Results

Here are some of the comments from the lucky owners that have seen results in a relatively short period of time. It is worth noting that all of the products that we have chosen to review the EVIS MD is the one that appears to give the fastest results:

• Fantastic product! I have used it for about 3 weeks now and it has made great improvement in my skin texture and tone. I had pretty deep fissures in several places (frown lines, and parenthesis on corner of my mouth), I use the device longer in those areas and it has diminished the deepness of the lines. Love it! I’ve tried a lot of creams, etc without avail. This has provided the most drastic changes in my skin’s appearance.
• We saw results the next morning after the first treatment with a reduction in my wife’s hyperpigmentation and firming of the skin.

My skin is noticeably more firm. My jaw line contour has visibly tightened and a number of fine lines have disappeared. Almost everyone who sees me comments on how much better I look.
• It really is an effective device, but it does take a fair amount of time to use and you have to use it faithfully. It also takes a while to work, so you have stick with it.

Negative Comments

There are very few complaints about the product itself as people seem to be happy with the quality and its operation. One lady did state that the 3 minute beeper was a bit loud but I guess that is a minor complaint in the grand scheme of things.

One person was convinced that the product was affecting their ability to sleep but this is the first time we have come across such a complaint after reading thousands of reviews from dozens of products so it is certainly not the norm.

The biggest issue it would appear is the customer service provided directly from the manufacturer. A few people stated that the customer service number provided with the product had been discontinued, emails were being returned and mail was going unanswered (one person had their warranty card returned as it was undeliverable). Clearly this is not a small issue and it is a shame because this truly is a good product.

It tends to work a lot faster than other products for many people and the cumulative effects for anti-aging and skin rejuvenation are strong. Unfortunately we cannot give it our highest recommendation because the manufacturer has made it slightly ‘buyer beware’ through being difficult to contact and offering a level of customer service that we don’t believe is good enough. If you want to see good results from red light therapy then don’t be afraid to buy the EVIS MD (if you can get your hands one one), just make sure that you get it somewhere where you know the seller will do the right thing should anything go wrong.

Developed using NASA based technology the DPL Therapy System uses medical grade LEDs and has been FDA cleared as a Class II Medical Device. It allows for hands free operation and has a lot of glowing reviews from dedicated users.

Skin Treatment

The visible red LEDs that penetrate to a depth of 8-10 mm help your skin in many ways – for your looks it will tighten your skin, smooth wrinkles and rough spots, reduce redness and shrink pore size. It will also help with damaged tissue, cuts, scars, wounds and infections.

Pain Relief

At the 880nm wavelength the infrared lights are going to be penetrating your skin to a depth of around 30-40mm which makes it effective for deep muscle, bone and joint problems. It will improve circulation, relax muscles and relieve pain and stiffness (particularly with arthritis sufferers).

With the panels placed on the stand it is very easy to treat your face and neck with this system. With the panels off the stand you can use them individually or in combination and Velcro straps are provided to keep them in place. For a system such as this we think it is best that we start with the owners who have had their machine for a while as they are the only ones that will be able to truly comment on its long term effectiveness.

One lady from Oregon who has owned a DPL Therapy System for a year has been very pleased with her results, she said ‘What I really like about this product is that if used correctly and consistently for the first month you only need to use it 2 – 3 times a week thereafter and it actually REPAIRS and RESTORES your skin and the collagen in it, so it’s not some fake, stiff wrinkle glue you adhere to your face and hope your sweetie doesn’t meet you in the shower without it. I love this product and have had people ask me, “WHAT ARE YOU USING ON YOUR SKIN? YOU ARE GLOWING!”‘

Another lady owner of 2½ years states that ‘it really works’ and that she now seriously looks 10-15 years younger – ‘I use it once a day, in a few places. Long term and correct usage clearly pays dividends for some owners but there are also a lot of owners who notice good results within the 1st weeks or months of owing their DPL Therapy System. After just a week one reviewer has reported the lightening of dark spots that she had battling with cream for years. Indeed most owners who stick with it are reporting within a short time frame firmer skin texture, tone, fewer wrinkles, less puffiness under the eyes and a clearer complexion.

Many are also finding using the DPL Therapy System better than other treatments they have tried. One lady who had been using microdermabrasion and renova said that this was the more effective treatment. Another lady had the following to say ‘Unlike alpha-hydroxy and glycolic acid, retinols, and other topicals, it is not irritating, and has yielded better results for me. If definite, moderate skin improvement is worth the investment to you, this is a great device.’

When it comes to pain relief this model has also gained a large number of admirers. Most have had success with relief from aches and pains and for one lady it helped with the discomfort from her foot, ankle and lower back. One lady with tendonitis reported more success with just 3 treatments when compared to more than 2 years of conventional moist heat, massage and sessions with her chiropractor.

Mrs Levy from Los Alamos also had a success story that she wanted to share – ‘My 55 year old husband has Dupuytren’s Contracture, a condition of the hands in which tendons shorten and cause fingers to curl toward the palm. The DPL Therapy System is not a miracle cure and as we have already said success depends upon you using it properly and sticking with it. There are some issues which people have with it and there are also a small number of people who say it doesn’t work for them. Some people took issue with the base, they just didn’t think it was strong or durable enough and that it was too easy for the panels to fall off (this may be because it was not set up correctly – we have included a set up video at the bottom of this page). One person complained about the length of the power cable and there are a few people that would have liked to be able to set the length of the timer themselves. Two ladies reported getting spots of discoloration where they applied the light and so took the decision to stop the treatment.

If you decide to take the plunge with the DPL Therapy System then please take on board these tips from other owners:

• Follow the instructions, treat it like a ‘work out’ and stick with it
• The benefits are cumulative and you won’t get them without time and dedication on your part
• Be careful with the stand and make sure that you ‘lock’ the two panels in place in their holders
• The results are better the closer you get to the lights. Don’t worry about laying the panels directly on your skin, even your face, they get warm but they don’t burn.

Our Recommendation

The DPL Therapy System is not a miracle device for everybody but overall the testimonials are mightily impressive. To improve your skin you have to stick with it, especially at the start. This is going to mean that you will need to dedicate the time to do it – and you won’t be able to read or drink tea during a treatment as you need to get really close to the lights – this is what audio books were invented for! It works incredibly well for pain relief although sticking the panels on with velcro can feel a little clunky and cumbersome. It is not the cheapest device around and so we would have liked to have seen a better quality stand and tougher materials. Ultimately these niggles are just niggles and this therapy system, if used properly, can show tremendous results and it is for that reason that we highly recommend it.

Beneficial for skin conditions, anti-aging and pain relief most owners are reporting good results from the Baby Quasar Red, but you have to set the time aside, follow the instructions and stick with it.

As you would hope for the price the Baby Quasar Red is made of high quality materials – aircraft quality aluminium housing and NASA grade electrical components in fact. Baby Quasar is well established in this field and this model has been designed for home use as a smaller version of their professional models. By utilizing 4 different wavelengths the light will penetrate your body to different depths meaning that the Baby Quasar Red is good for pain relief (deeper penetration) and skin improvements (shallower penetration). They say their ‘Sequential Pulsing Technology’ is to ‘reduce negative harmonics’ and that it is ‘balanced and calibrated for healthy and vibrant skin’ – we are not entirely sure what this means but we do know that for most people who follow the instructions and stay the course that the Baby Quasar Red does work.

The treatment involves dividing your face into 6 sections and then lightly touching the lights to your skin and moving the device around that area until you hear the soft tone which tells you it is time to move onto the next section. Once you have done all 6 sections then you can repeat the treatment if desired using Continuous Wave (Green LED) or High Frequency (Red LED).

They state you need to keep this up for 6 weeks before you see results but from the owner’s reviews we know that this can vary greatly, some people are seeing improvements straight away whilst others have to stick with it for months. BabyQ also say that you should apply the Pure Silk Serum first but a lot of people use their own moisturizer or nothing at all.

For most people who stick with it then they do get the advertised benefits from the cell rejuvenation that the Baby Quasar Red light causes – reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, firmer and smoother skin and a reduction in pores. Acne and Rosacea sufferers are also saying that they find this product to be an effective treatment. Because of the higher wavelengths this product will also penetrate to a depth where it will have positive effects upon muscles and tendons making it an effective tool for pain relief.

There are quite a few reviews for the Baby Quasar Red and on the whole they are good, over half the people have given this product the full rating available. What is clear is that those with the greatest success are the ones that say they committed themselves to the treatment and continued with it over a long period of time. You do need to find 30 mins or more every other day and you are unlikely to see results straight away and this is where most of the criticism stems from (excluding the unlucky owners whose product broke early into ownership).

Great Results

The results and the time it takes to see those results vary greatly but for a lot of people the Baby Quasar Red is certainly working wonders quickly:

• After just a few treatments, the results were very noticable. Smaller pores, finer lines, and just smoother feeling skin. Make-up glides on if you still feel the need to use it! Highly recommended!!!
• I bought the Baby Quasar after quite a bit of research & I’m so glad I did. After only 4 uses I have seen a difference. Now, 2 weeks later, I’m seeing better skin texture, a decrease in hyper-pigmentation and rosacea. I’m very happy with this purchase…which was quite expensive for me (but well worth it!)
• Cannot quite put my finger on it, but … my face overall looks better. I have used it now for 2 weeks. But something must have happened as my face appears brighter, smoother, more even toned and younger in just two weeks.

These are the lucky ones, for most of us it is going to take time and dedication but it’s worth it judging by the number of slow burning success stories:

• I am almost 27 and have had this bad hyper pigmentation on my forehead, cheeks and upper lip for 7 years. One lady from Denver was close to returning her Baby Quasar Red as she wasn’t getting the desired results but decided to stick with it and was glad that she did. She updated her review with the following:

• UPDATE after 60 Days – Keeping the Baby Quasar. My skin looks fantastic. The sun spot has not returned. My skin color is evened out and has youthful “glow” to it. Still not sure about the shrinking pores, but wrinkles are reduced. My husband (who would have LOVED to say the $400 gadget isn’t working) actually agrees it is working.

Some Unhappy Owners

Of course not every owner is happy with their purchase as we can see from these examples:

• I have had it for two weeks and used it 5 times each week. Maybe there is shrinkage of some blood vessels around my nose, maybe not. Otherwise I see no particular difference.
• After using it religiously for a month and a half (exactly as stated on the instructions) I have noticed a slightly more even toned complexion. What I have NOT seen is any increased firmness, radiance, reduced pore size, or a decrease in fine lines.
• I was really hoping for the best with this. Especially after all the positive reviews I read. I’ve been using the Baby Q Red religiously for several weeks. I use it every day or every two days. I haven’t noticed a visible change in my skin. My fine lines and brown spots look the same. Although, it has cleared up the acne on my back shoulders. I’m going to keep up the treatments and hope it’s works as an anti-aging measure. But I am disappointed I haven’t seen visible results.
• I wish I had done the sensible thing and gotten a device that either has a larger head on the wand, or a device that delivers light from a small panel display. The basic recommended treatment on the face alone takes 24 minutes, and use of the Green Setting (which is timed in four-minute intervals) is another 24. That’s 48 minutes pushing the wand around.

What we find more worrying are those owners who end up with a faulty device. We only found about 3 people out of 50 that had such a complaint but that does seem high for a product of this price. That said, as we mention in the Product Features and Specification, the Baby Quasar Red comes with a one year warranty:

• I thought this product worked extremely well until it just quit working. I had great results and was completely happy with it until part of the lights just stopped working after 30 uses. I always handled the wand very carefully, so it was very disappointing and expensive to have this happen.
• I don’t know if this product delivers results or not for I haven’t got a chance to evaluate it, it constantly shuts down after working for only a few minutes.
• I tried two of these. I never was able to see if there was much of a difference long term because the first stopped working after a few months and the second never worked.

Our Recommendation

We believe that the Baby Quasar Red is a good product that will produce results if you are prepared to stick with it. Don’t expect to see improvements straight away and be prepared to keep going after the 6 weeks are up. Results for most people are subtle but continuous and so the cumulative effect of long term use is good. It is not hands free and the head is small so developing a routine and schedule is advisable. A lot of owners find that good television is the best accompaniment to a BabyQ treatment.
